Experience or education? Both!

When I was younger,  I used to hang my hat on the fact that I could learn anything and if I really pushed myself in the books, then I would be better than the next guy who did not.  This worked for a while and would probably still play in to the perception of me as an individual.  However, through a lot of introspection, I have also learned that experience is an amazing asset.

For me, education is paramount.  There is no substitute for learning every day and I hope that my thirst for knowledge will never wane.  I love to learn.  Learning also means that you have to keep an open mind.  You have to be concious that your knowledge of a subject is limited and you do not know everything.  Socrates used to go around proving this.  You need to start every day with the idea that you can learn from every experience and make it a concious decision to do it.

Next, experience is complementary to education.  Education is worthless if you do not use what you have learned in some way.  You make know the atomic weight of oxygen, but what good is it if you never use it for something.  See, I know that it is 16g and I am USING it here as an example of knowledge.  See how that works?  😉   Some of you will think that I found it on Wikipedia before posting here, but I actually learned it as a junior in high school chemistry and have a weirdly accurate memory for numbers.

All that being said, take heart that what you do not know, you can learn.  And education coupled with experience will give you the best base to start with and with which you can make the best decisions at work and in life.  Be open to new edutation and experience, it will get you farther than you ever though imaginable and probably down a different, more interesting path than you would have ever anticipated.

Time for Fun!

Now that I have actual work to do, I am having less FUN time. This doesn’t mean I don’t like my job, but now I have less mindless time. However, I still make sure to MAKE time to have some fun. To this end, you NEED to check out Scam School, a Revision3.com Internet TV show.

This show is usually about 10 minutes long and gives you tips and tricks that you can perform in the bar scene to get free drinks.  They can be considered “magic”, but are generally quick tricks of the eye and a little misdirection.

A lot of fun!

Check out the other quality Revision3 shows while you are there.  Maybe you will even become a tech geek while you’re at it!  😉

Different Definitions

Have you ever wondered about different definitions for words?  I was out to get some lunch today and saw a gentleman with a Wicked T-shirt on.  The tag line on the back was “Defy Gravity”.  In thinking about this, I starting thinking about alternate definitions of the word “Gravity”.   Given that the show is about witches, I assume this means that they want you to fly around on broomsticks and defy gravity in the physical sense.  But perhaps, just perhaps, they want you to defy serious or dignified behavior, which is another definition for the word.  Maybe the writers even MEANT this to be a double-entendre just to play with our emotions.  If so, the bastards!  How dare they play with my emotions that way!  I am incensed and obfuscated!  Hey, I got to use the words “incensed” and “obfuscated”!  😉  Following the general tone of this post, you may want to look those words up for their alternate definitions.  I may not be angy and confused.  Perhaps I smell good and got dark.  hmmmm…

I have to say that I am intrigued by the general notion that you could defy being serious.  Perhaps this is just the catch phrase we need around here!  It seems that every day is a little more serious and a little more boring.  Lets DEFY GRAVITY and start to live happily ever after!  We have to start somewhere.
